    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

MS 291 is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 293.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the power of this saw Stihl saws outclass anything I have ever used. I use my saw weekly in the summer clearing and cutting and this saw has the power I need to get my work done. I purchased it primarily for the purpose of milling my own lumber from my logs. I have yet to try it but I am confident this saw will get it done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good saw This is a great cutting saw! I have a 20" bar on it and it runs it just fine. I have used it 4 or 5 times now and the only problem I have noticed is the airfilter can not get very dirty or it will not start. If you keep it very clean the saw works well. I like the twist on air filter but the set up on my 180 c seems to work better

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this saw This is my first new STIHL saw. It has plenty of power and is very easy to handle. It cranks up right away and seems to do well on fuel. Love this saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely reliable! I use the saw a lot cutting trees for the sawmill. Starts every morning and cuts reliably through the day. Friends who own other brands have commented on how fast it cuts and how easy it is to start. I also use a 029 20” farm boss that I purchased new in 1998 that is still reliable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Living on reputation? After owning a Farm Boss for about 30 yrs and cutting about 8-10 face cords a year, my saw was beginning to show some wear and tear, so I decided to buy a new MS291. It started and cut great for almost a year and the head burned out. I took it back to the dealer and Stihl looked at it and replaced the saw. After 2 years of the same type of cutting, the new one burned out! Stihl would not replace it or even give me credit towards a new one unless I paid to have it torn apart to inspect it. This would be covered if Stihl decided it was their problem, but there were no guarantees. I always used the Stihl mixture and never abused the saw. Paying as much as I did for what a Stihl costs, for anything that only lasts 2 years is ridiculous! I researched top chainsaws and seldom see Stihl in the top 10 anymore. I will be looking at a comparable brand that has a better review in the near future. Poor quality and poor customer service will send Stihl the way of some other big names in chainsaws that are no longer around. It's a shame a former quality product seems to be living on it's reputation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Starts easy, Dependable, reliable, outstanding I use the MS291 to help maintain my 38 acre farm/forrest land. It is versatile allowing me to fell large hardwoods and efficiently cut them into chord wood. It is a great balance between a heavy duty saw and light duty work. Great saw, I'd highly recommend for multi-purpose work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty awesome saw I had to get a new saw and this one is really good saw I actually just cut down a good size tree and and cut it up handle it like the tree was nothing as lot's of power even though it's a bigger saw was not so big that it hurts your back like some others can trust me when I say it can cut down pretty good size tree's I have a chipper chain on my with that being said the saw can do more then what you think it can I love it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful and easy to use This saw has been great for what I needed to do. I tried one of the larger models which was a bit too powerful for me, especially when it kicked back. This model was much more manageable and I was able to cut through 18-24 inch trunks with no problem. We had a bunch of 4-6 foot tall trunks that had been topped off and needed to clear them out. This saw did the trick.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointed I bought a ms291 20" less than 3 years ago. Have not used it much - use an 18" saw for most of my cutting. First time I used it one of the nuts came off while cutting - lost the nut and had to stop.Last year the sprocket disintegrated while making the third or fourth cut on a good size tree. Got that fixed and the first time I used it the chain break handle broke. Got that fixed and the first time I used it both nuts, the cover, chain and bar all fell off in the middle of a cut.Last week while making the fifth cut on a log the engine died - white smoke came out. The repair shop said the engine was shot.I used only ethanol free gas and Stihl oil in this saw. Scrapped the saw.I have noticed when doing a search for best chain saws that Stihl is not mentioned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw for my farm!! This saw has power to spare and is very dependable.
Date published: 2018-05-07
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Pour starting, definetly short on power with a 28" bar. HMMM don't believe everthing a dealer tells you? Actually this saw now just sits on my bench in the garage. It does not like to start and usually takes 20-30 pulls to start.
Date published: 2018-05-01
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hard to start - floods easily I have owned the MS290 for over six years. Great saw until the threads for the spark plug disintegrated. No chance for a good fix. They redesigned the #290 to be now called #291. A little less power and you need to undo 3 screws to take the hood off which is very inconvenient. My main problem it is very easy to flood and thus not start — undo hood, take plug out, dry, pump piston 2x, replace hood (remember three screws). I done this 4 times today and still no starting. The 290 was a beauty to start...never flooded. I am unhappy that I bought this new model? I thought new models were to be improved...this one isn’t....

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First time Stihl owner Great running saw. I have so far cut down three red oak trees that were about 24-30" in diameter. The saw cut through the green oak surprisingly well. The only negative I have found using this saw is that if you run it for a short period, but plenty long enough to get the engine good and warm, shut it down and let it set for just a few minutes, it is slightly difficult to get started again. It is not extremely aggravating at this point but I am concerned once the saw gets some age to it, it might be a real pain to start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what I expected Thought about saws for a long time and compared a lot. Bought this saw at my local farmers coop it was the biggest saw before you got into the pro saws. We have just bought 2 acres of land that needs trees cleared and it has held up fine. I’ve ran around 5 tanks of gas through it without a problem. I lost a bar nut the first day but that was my fault. Love the gas and oil caps. Nice and easy to unscrew unlike other brands that’s a pain. Hope it lasts many years to come!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Mid Range Saw. I have purchased about 5 Stihl Chainsaws throughout my life. Some for gifts, but mostly for myself. I even purchased a battery powered Stihl saw that I love about 5 years ago.My experience with Stihl tells me that they run better when they are broken in. My MS291 ran great from the first time I started it. I purchased mine with the 20"bar. I am satisfied with the amount of power the saw has. This is the perfect saw for what I need at this time.I really like the fact that Stihl sends me coupons a few times a year. Keeps me buying more products.I will say this about Sthil and possibly other brands- Buy the best Stihl 2 cycle mix and buy only marine fuel with no ethanol. Your saw will start easier and start easy after sitting on the shelf for extended amount of time. Buy the cheap low octane fuel and your going to have starting issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from POWERFUL CUTTER Purchased this to work around my property. Donnie was great help and gave good instructions on what to do for starting and also for storage. Saw has plenty of power and cuts through large logs effortlessly. Saw starts every time for me so far. Saw left the store with full tank of gas and full tank of chain oil. Was ready to go. Great place to purchase and get support at Sladeks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw This is my second Stihl saw. I had an MS270 that I lost in a shed fire that was struck by lightening. I replaced it with the slightly bigger MS291 with a 20” bar and have been really happy with it. Starts very easily. I would recommend using the Stil Motomix fuel. It makes a big difference not having any ethanol in the gas. The Motomix is worth the extra cost to keep the saw running well.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from lasted almost 6 hours. Purchased the MS291. Brought it home. Read the manual. Topped it off with new gas with STIHL brand oil mix, & checked the chain oil. All good. It cut really well for two hours intermittently, re-filled oil and fuel as needed. No issues whatsoever. Thrilled.Used it a week later for about 2 hours same story. No issues. Cut really well. Still thrilled. In fact, I told my old man to go buy one just like it, and he did!Yesterday I used it for about an hour and a half when out of nowhere, it gradually started losing power...then...just died. Would not restart. Good on fuel, good on oil. No fire. I let it sit a half-hour or so, and tried again. This time I cranked on it about a dozen times and it reluctantly started and I finished my cuts and put it away. This morning, I went to fire it start. No fire at all. Let it sit for 15 minutes or so and tried again...nothing.Frustrated, I took it back to the dealer and was informed that "the engine had blown, that there was a chunk out of the piston head and a big score down the cylinder wall". How on earth does that happen in less than 6 hours of light use?I purchased this saw for it's longevity, quality, ease of use, and reliability based on past STIHL purchases and I am INCREDIBLY disappointed.Maybe I got a lemon, maybe I just have bad luck, but now I'm out a 3 week-old saw and I have a bad taste in my mouth for STIHL.6 HOURS of use?!?! Seriously?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent saw My first chainsaw. Easy to start, use. I have four acres, about half heavily forested, to attend to. As far as I am concerned, my first weekend out with the chainsaw convinced me that it had already paid for itself. Milt's is a terrific store. Patiently spent a lot of time with me not only on basic operations but also detailed instructions regarding safety. Also took the time to sign me up at purchase for the basic warranty and sold me the oils, etc, to make the warranty two years. I will shop there again, for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw I purchased this saw 3-10-18 to cut up a tree that fell from a hurricane Irma this past fall. All the buddy's of mine kept saying they will get to cutting it up but I got tired of waiting 6 months and looking at this tree. A few years ago I used an older ms290 to cut some wood and felt that was a good base for a saw. Shop I purchased saw from said the ms271 replaced the older ms290. Long story short I went with the 291 as it has a little more power. Tree was cut up in no time. Very impressed with the power. As a homeowner on the South Carolina coast this saw is probably more than I will ever need. I use the stihl premixed fuel as I don't want the carb to gum up if I need to use it months down the road and will even drain that out and run the tank dry.All in all I am very happy with the purchase. I read some people complain about the weight. My opinion on that is good tools/equipment generally weigh more because they are built better. That's just my opinion though. I do feel it should come with a case though but that is not a del breaker. This is my first stihl purchase. I'm not a robot nor do work for stihl.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive saw. When it came to a saw there wasn’t any other brand to buy then a stihl. Ms291 with 20” bar is a great saw. I cut a lot of wood, I cut up around 4cord just for my firewood for the season, every year. Plus clearing a few acres. Most all I cut is hardwood. First thing to do though is get rid of the green anti kickback chain and get the yellow one. That will make a huge difference and it will eat up anything. I cut a lot in the winter and deal with a lot of frozen hardwood that’s not seasoned. Cut your rakers down 25tho or so and it’ll handle the frozen hardwood great. Keep the chain sharp and saw oiled and you’ll have a long lasting saw that’ll handle pretty much anything you throw at it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from a good middle saw i bought this saw to cut bigger logs for firewood. it does better than my other saw, but still bogs down in bigger oak logs. i will look at a larger one in the future. runs great. if it floods hard to restart. my fault but still slowed my cutting day. plenty of power to clear fence rows and medium size logs. great service

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All the power you will need !!! I have a small farm in NY and burn approximately 25 to 30 face cords a year. I bought a ms 291 chain saw and just could not believe the power of this saw. my old STIHL 026 couldn't come close to the power of this ms 291. I highly recommend this saw to anyone who burns wood or has a small to mid size farm. I know this saw will make life a little easier as it has for me in the year I have owned it.
